Stumbling on Outlander Filming

Written by
My big cheesy face My big cheesy face Slainte Scotland

Right so, it has taken me nearly a week to post this but here we go...last week not only did I have the privilege of meeting Diana Gabaldon, the author of the Outlander series at Stirling Castle, but during our Outlander tours last week, we stumbled upon filming for series 2. Phew!

I have to admit that I was the ultimate fangirl and my outlander tour group missed a lot of the tour because they wanted to enjoy watching the filming. We did still visit Doune (Castle Leoch) and Midhope Castle (Lallybroch) though.

The filming location in question was Culross which features as Cranesmuir in Series 1. I am not going to ruin it for anyone in series 2, but let’s say it is a pivotal location from book 2 :-)

How I met Sam:

I was walking towards the coffee shop to get warm and walking towards me, were some kilted men. They said “Good Morning” (everyone on production etc was so friendly) and so I responded politely, then suddenly I noticed that Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) was walking towards me, he also said Good Morning and this obviously had me producing the most glaikit expression ever (a good Scottish word for you), and I kind of just mumbled something and made a quick retreat. Another red face to add to the list!

Later, I met him again and this time I was a little more composed and he very kindly signed by Outlander book and posed in a picture with me. It was a very surreal experience and he was just so lovely. He actually took the time to come and meet with the fans when he really didn’t have too (and it was certainly not expected).

So one of the benefits of having a very similar name to the leading lady of Outlander, Caitriona Balfe, is that on the odd occasion, a fan will think that they will receive a tour from her and not little ol me :-) Well I managed to meet Caitriona and I was blown away with how beautiful she is, girls I am afraid there is no contest ;-) She was also so gracious and like Sam, took the time to be with her fans. She seemed genuinely interested in everyone and I am so happy to have had the chance to meet her. She also signed my booked and had a wee chuckle at my name. Cait also made the day for my guests and were a definite highlight for them.

To the future

They are filming over the next couple of months, so you never know, this may happen again. If you would like to join us on one of our tours, please get in touch

Till next time Sassenachs.
