Midhope Castle (Lallybroch) to change its visiting terms. Because of the increased visitor numbers they are changing access terms and intend to charge a small visiting fee.

We visit Midhope Castle regularly on our Outlander Tours. Recently the numbers of visitors have increased dramatically. We have also noticed many visitors do not have permits received from Hopetoun Farm Shop and we have also noticed some terrible behaviour on the estate. Midhope is situated on private land and between a few working farms so behaving with respect and restraint when visiting the site is common sense. This will ensure the continued goodwill from those that live and work there. If not there might be a time when visitation to the site may be stopped. I am sure I speak for all Outlander and history fans, that would be a sad day.

Please read below the communication we have received regarding changes to accessing Midhope castle:

“In light of the increased interest in Midhope we are continually reviewing how to best meet visitor needs and have a few updates that you all need to be aware of:

We have a large event on the Estate this Saturday and Sunday (5th/6th) and due to the increase in traffic and pedestrians in the area will not be issuing any permits for Midhope on either day

Our new farm shop manager has kindly offered to accept permit requests from 9am each day instead of 10am. Although the shop is closed you can knock on the front doors and someone will assist you. Early access will only apply to tour operators and not to general public.

As from Monday 8th August when you pick up your vehicle pass from Hopetoun Farm Shop there will be a small charge of £2 per guest in your group (excluding the guide). We already know that the average group size visiting the castle is 3-4 guests so we feel this is not an unreasonable amount to charge.  Any funds raised will go towards further improvements in the Midhope area including a new information board on Midhope’s history arriving soon.”
