Virtual Jacobites and Scottish Highlands Tour

On Tuesday the 2nd of June 2020, Catriona conducted one of our most popular Virtual Tours so far; our Jacobites and Scottish Highlands Tour. This tour included stops at Culloden Battlefield, the Clava Cairns (4000-year-old burial cairns and standing stones) and the Highland Folk Museum by Newtonmore in the Cairngorms.

It was a poignant tour with a number of our guests joining in their own experiences of being at the battlefield themselves. The scenery displayed was breathtaking as well as desolate, adding to the sombre atmosphere of the tour.

The tour, like our usual Jacobites and Highlands Tour, is centred around the 1745 Jacobite Uprising lead by Bonnie Prince Charlie. Given that we only had a short time, we focussed on the defeat at Culloden, the lead up to the Battle and information on what precisely the Jacobites were fighting for.  Outlander Fans will be interested in the real history portrayed in their favourite TV show as well as having the chance to experience real-life standing stones and burial cairns near Culloden. We finished the tour with a visit to the Highland Folk Museum, used as a filming location for Outlander, it was a fantastic stop, showing off Britain’s first outdoor museum with replica Highland township.
